Guadalupe Griptape

Guadalupe Griptape
I was commissioned by a client to come up with a design of Lady Guadalupe to then be drawn onto a sheet of skateboard griptape by a separate artist.

Ideas and Sketches
Before the design process, I decided what crucial aspects should be included and I had to do some research on what the figure symbolized and found out that this is a religious symbol named Lady of Guadalupe. One of the ideas I had was having Guadalupe ride a skateboard but I deemed it a bit disrespectful because she is a religious symbol. Some assets that I wanted to make sure and include in my design are her robe being sea green and roses.
Design Challenges
My client did not like the initial background that I made so I thought of ideas to make the artwork feel more cohesive. I decided to incorporate the Mexican flag which now makes the design work well as a whole and ties the history of the figure to the artwork as well.
